Propane leak at RECC in Kentville Christmas Day

Local News

On Christmas morning at approximately 10 AM, Kentville Firefighters were dispatched to a report of a propane leak at the Credit Union Recreation Complex in Kentville.

After speaking with Deputy Chief, Ian Fairclough, some individuals had arrived to play squash, when they noticed a strong smell of propane outside. After entering the building, there was a strong smell found inside as well.

Firefighters responded and shut the propane off at the tanks. While investigating, crews found high levels inside the building.

Michelin was requested to assist with their large exhaust fan to help ventilate the large commercial sized building. Firefighters spent a few hours working to clear the structure.

Deputy Chief Fairclough was able to confirm the problem was due to ice falling from the roof, impacting the propane line going into the building.

Irving was also called, and a technician was on site working to repair the issue.

The building was shut down for the remainder of the day. There were no reported injuries as a result of the incident.

Nova Scotia Power was requested as a precaution and attended the scene but not required. Kentville Police Service also attended the scene.
